Finding neat science experiments to do in our house is high on the priority list. This is one of Brayden's favourite science experiments to do...well actually putting baking soda and vinegar in a Ziploc baggy, sealing it up and shaking it, is his favourite...but this is one of his favourite "safe" ones!
The experiment "Exploding Colours" is from "Sensational Science Activities with Dr. Zed" by Gordon Penrose. It's one of our favourite science books. Nice and simple but really neat results. First you fill a cookie sheet with milk, then put drops of food colouring on the milk.
Once you have finished putting your various drops of food colouring in the milk, put one drop of dish soap (washing up liquid) in the center of each drop of colouring and watch what happens.
It is so neat to see what happens. We lucked out in that the drop transformed into a star. You will have to try it for yourself to see what happens. I must say I was mesmerized...we did the experiment several times because the reaction was so neat. 
Brayden thought the picture below looked like a ghost. Can you tell he has Halloween on the brain?
